“…the one who rules in heaven laughs.”
Psalm 2:4 (NLT)
Let’s set the scene…
Nations in turmoil. People raging against God. Earth’s leaders on a mission to get rid of the Divine. Everywhere you look, people rejecting Christ.
This is the disturbing picture in the first three verses of Psalm 2. Things are falling apart on Planet Earth. You get the feeling it’s not going to end well.
How does God respond to the situation? It’s safe to say His first response is not what you’d expect.
“…the One who rules in heaven laughs.”
God laughs!
“Heaven-throned God breaks out laughing!”
Psalm 2:4 (MSG)
But, what’s so funny?
God laughs because He has already won! God laughs because any attempt to defeat His purpose is futile, and nothing anyone does can ever diminish His sovereignty! God is “Joy invincible,” to quote Switchfoot.
Where we would want to call down fire from heaven on those who reject God (Luke 9:54), His response challenges us to lift our eyes and see that He is Heaven-throned! He is so high above and so far beyond our limited frames of reference!
“…the One who rules in heaven laughs.”
Today, we lift our eyes to see Heaven-throned God. So high above. So far beyond. He laughs not to make light of the struggles we face but because He has already won! May you be encouraged and your joy restored as you hear the eternal sound of the victorious laughter of God.
