“…the LORD sustains me.”
Psalm 3:5 (NIV)
Last night I drove through an epic, rather dangerous storm that suddenly hit Durban without warning. Roads became rivers within minutes and even the most capable SUV moved at snail’s pace to make it home safely.
I can’t imagine what it must be like to be out at sea in a storm like that. I’m sure even the toughest sailor is weary of that kind of weather!
Sleeping in the storm is next-level, even with a pillow. It’s a telltale sign of confidence in the protection and sovereignty of God. It’s a recognition that elements beyond the control of humans remain under His authority.
When those closest to Jesus thought for sure they were on the brink of death, Jesu woke up, rebuked the storm and spoke the words, “Peace! Be still!” (Mark 4:39, ESV)
David could lie down to sleep in the midst of his storm because he knew it was the LORD who sustained him, not his own weary efforts to keep it together.
The ancient Hebrew word used here means to support, to uphold, to allow someone to rest their weight on you. By resting his head on the capable hands of the LORD, David enjoyed a better night’s sleep in the storm than in the comfort of his palatial bed back home.
“…the LORD sustains me.”
As these words become your prayer today, know that you are supported and held in the hands of God. Let your full weight rest on Him. As you hand over your weariness and submit the storm to the LORD, may you know the inner stillness that comes from being sustained by Him. Peace. Be still. Who knows, maybe tonight you’ll enjoy your best night’s sleep in years…
